HealthPax™ CES
FDA approves CES unit to Treat Insomnia, Anxiety & Depression
HealthPax™ is a safe treatment that often helps people with emotional stress and emotional problems, such as insomnia, anxiety and depression. It also helps improve concentration, memory, and learning, while reducing stress and anger. I highly recommend it to my clients, friends and family.
Healthpax™ has been distributed as a prescription device for more than 20 years.
Anxiety Disorder
DSM IV, which is the official catalog of the American Psychiatric Association, describes panic attack, the main element of anxiety disorder, as including several of these problems: pounding heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, feeling of choking, chest pain, abdominal distress, lightheadedness, fear of losing control or becoming crazy, fear of dying and others. If this is a problem for you, remember Healthpax™.
Depression
Depression may be present when you feel sad and empty. You or others may notice changes in your behavior such as: markedly diminished pleasure in most of your daily activities, agitation with little or no provocation, slowing down in daily activities, feelings of worthlessness, having too little energy or difficulty concentrating. This is according to the American Psychological Association.
Drugs, Alcohol and Cigarette Withdrawal
While Healthpax™ is not FDA approved for drug, alcohol and cigarette withdrawal, it was a friend’s success using Healthpax™ for alcohol withdrawal that first got my attention. I have posted an interesting doctor’s report on a patient’s experience using Healthpax™ to painlessly withdraw from drug use. See drug withdrawal report.

- Awareness
- Cognitive Functioning
- Levels of Mental Performance
- Memory * I.Q.
Health Pax offers three types of electrodes: a pair of comfortable cotton-padded Ear Clip Electrodes, a set of Self-Adhesive electrodes and a pin-connector leadwire for use with variable size electrodes. Most CES applications will use the earclip electrodes.
Health Pax pulse rate frequencies - 0.5 hertz and 100 Hz are selected by sliding a switch in the battery compartment. Individuals may use both settings to determine which frequency provides the best results. These two pulse rates have been used historically in other CES devices over the past 30 years. Health Pax offers three timer selections of 30 minutes, 45 minutes or continuous operation. Following the initial series of Health Pax applications, the device may be used on occasion as needed to maintain the achieved level of improvements. Normally, CES is used Once or Twice Daily for 30 minutes per session, or longer if desired.

Case Studies
Successful 14-Day Methadone Detox of 30 Year Old Female
Craniel Electrical Stimulation (CES) - Case Study
Research Background
Cranial Electrical Stimulation (CES) has been an effective tool in supporting withdrawl of patients with long term methadone(1) and opiate dependence(2,3) in inpatient settings. Less attention has been paid to the role of CES use managing withdrawal from opiates on an outpatient basis. The following self-report suggests further research exploration of methadone detoxification would be a worthwhile direction to follow.
CES is FDA approved for the treatment of anxiety, depression and insomnia. More than 20 studies(4) have been done with additive individuals and there is no evidence that dependence on CES develops. Also, there is an absence of significant side effects from the use of CES and there is no overuse syndrome noted in the literature.

Patient Background Information
A 30 year old female with a family history of alcoholism and addition sought detox from chronic methadone use. She began using 30 mg./day of methadone about a year ago. Her withdrawal syndrome became evident to her at 20mgs. In a three week period she reduced her daily use to 5-10mgs. of methadone.
Three days before beginning treatment that included CES she reported having symptoms across all systems that are affected by withdrawal and used 5mgs. daily. Her self-report begins that day. She reported tachycardia and panic attacks during this period, an experience new to her. She described it as her heart pounding so strongly it felt as if it would burst, perfuse sweating and a sense she was going to die. Involuntary leg spasms occurred in this period. She did not eat, was throwing up, had loose stools and was extremely fatigued.
At the start of her first session, which had a 3 hour duration, she rated her stress level as a 10 (maximum discomfort) on a 1-10 scale. She began CES use and within the first few minutes there were subtle changes in her stress level. Within 30 minutes her stress rating showed a decrease. As the session continued, she was more at ease, which is consistent with clinical use of CES. At the end of the session, she rated her stress level as a 6, or maybe a 5. She was directed to continue "round the clock" CES use for the next 5 days. The following is her self-report encompassing both a pre-treatment and the treatment period.
Case Study Process
3 days prior to treatment with Dr. Stecker - Been 24hrs free of methadone but used 5mgs this evening. I was proud but scared. I felt tired and miserable. I cried all afternoon. I haven't slept well in about 5 days and I tossed and turned all night feeling like I was going to crawl ouf of my skin.
2 days prior to treatment with Dr. Stecker - I get out of bed feeling complete exhaustion. By 8am I am in my bed crying and having panic attacks. I tell myself I can't handle it. Couple hours later I am dealing with it, the body aches, the upset stomach, feeling like I am coming down HARD off a bad trip. I cry all afternoon and by 4:30pm I relapsed (5mg). It honestly didn't help. I knew in my mind it was wrong. I am so disappointed in myself but I tell myself I can't do this on my own. I start calling rehabs looking for a quick detox but it seems like NO ONE wants to help me. I am turned away at the rehab. They tell me my insurance won't cover my stay. I feel hopeless. No sleep again.
1 day prior to treatment with Dr. Stecker - Watching time pass as I did all night. I get out of bed feeling hopeless. It's 7am and I haven't slept in days! I am crying and feeling so much anxiety it scares me. I have a panic attack. I take another 5mg. My anxiety is a 10, I have the shakes, my body hurts, I am scared.
Start of treatment with Dr. Stecker - I go to see Dr. Stecker at 12:30pm feeling hopeless. Once I start the treatment, I feel a sense of HOPE. I haven't slept in days, I am exhausted. After 2 hours with Dr. Stecker, my anxiety has dropped. The (CES) stimulation seems to be working. I get home about 3pm feeling better but skeptical. I have chills and my body still aches but the anxiety is better. I get 4-5 hours sleep. YES!
Day 2 - I get up feeling better, a little more energy. Still not hungry, haven't eaten in 4 days, just toast. Worked with Dr. Stecher for 2 hrs and used CES all night. In the pm I feel exhausted again, body exhausted. At night didn't get much sleep.
Day 3 - I am frustrated because of no sleep. I eat toast and a banana. Anxiety much better, feeling in more control, no urge to take methadone. My body still hurts. Thursday I make dinner and eat it. WOW I felt hungry. I got a couple hours of sleep. (Patient was seen. Less withdrawal sxs.) Used CES around the clock.
Day 4 - I feel so much more energized. My anxiety is better. I was able to do chores around the house. I ate breakfast, lunch and dinner. My appetite is back. My body still hurts. Used CES around the clock. I get about 4 hours sleep tonight.
Day 5 - I wake up feeling tired but I know I can do it. No feeling of urges to take drugs. I go food shopping; do more chores around the house. They exhaust me. I have diarrhea, a headache and body aches, no anxiety. Slept 5 hours. Use CES 24/7.
Day 6 - I feel great. My energy is up, I feel good. I have a great outlook on my future. I have headaches, leg cramps and get tired throughout the day. I eat 3 meals, I go tanning, which haven't done in awhile. I get 5 hours sleep. Used CES, saw Dr. Stecker.
Day 7 - I am up at 7:30 feeling good and feeling positive. Head aches, legs ache. Body just feels tired. I do wash, mop floors, vacuum, then I relax all afternoon. I go tanning again. I am 7 days free of methadone and truly have a positive outlook for my future. 2 hours sleep. Was out of bed by 5am. Used CES several times throughout day.
Day 8 - Feeling exhausted, legs ache. Other than that, no withdrawal symptoms.
Day 9 - I got 5 hours sleep. Feel same as yesterday but not as exhausted. Legs really ache! More energy. Run out to do some errands. No other withdrawal. Saw Dr. Stecker.
Day 16 - I continue to improve. No methadone urges. Feel better than I have in years. Able to be a mom, going tanning, exercising. Sleep is normal. I have my real life back.

Testimonials
Craniel Electrical Stimulation (CES)
Testimonials
"Several months ago I suffered with severe insomnia. I couldn't get more than 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night, and sometimes I couldn't sleep at all. I tried all kinds of sleep medications and supplements without success. I saw a neurologist who specializes in sleep problems but she was of little help. I did some research on the internet and came across studies with CES. I decided to buy a HealthPax unit from Health Directions. Within 2 weeks I was able to get 7 hours of sleep a night. I used it every day for two months and during that time I had no insomnia. After two months I got over confident and did not use it for awhile. My insomnia started to come back. Now I find that using it 2 or 3 times a week is sufficient for me to get a good nights sleep."

"My family is in the middle of a miracle. Your CES unit is the catalyst for this miracle and we are so very grateful to you. I would like to tell you a little of our story. Although four members of the family have great stories to tell concerning the CES unit, the greatest of all the miracles concerns my grandson, Johnathan. He is eighteen years old and has been heavily medicated for more than twelve years... Even with all of this medication, he was still unable to leave his mother's presence; He was still hallucinating....and was sure someone or something was going to harm him. He has been unable to leave home, except for school...and was never able to spend the night with anyone and has had to sleep in his parents bedroom. He began using CES in July 2004. After about 8 or 9 days, my daughter called from their home in Chicago to see if I could keep him for awhile. He was feeling better and she wondered if he might be able to get on an airplane and fly here... Mind you, this child has never left his mothers side and here we are talking about putting him on an airplane to travel by himself. He had apprehensions...but he came. He used the CES unit while here for four weeks. Just as remarkable, while here, he was able to challenge himself to make brief forages into malls and stores and bathrooms by himself. He has never been able to do so in the past. Since he has been on medication for years, and has been getting the same encouragement from mom, dad and family all of his life and since CES in the only obvious change...it seems clear to us that the CES is the cause of these positive changes."

"The HealthPax is much more effective and I've recently been able to wean myself off of SSRI medication with it's help. I'm so glad to have found CES and its unbelievable how much better it works than medication. It just amazes me that the public isn't really aware of these devices and their effectiveness...What I wouldn't give to have had one of these about 15 years ago. If I only knew. Thanks for making a great product."

"I wanted to let you know that for about 6 months (since Feb. 2004) I have been prescribing and using myself an electrical device about the size of a pack of cigarettes called a Cranial Electro Therapy Stimulator. The FDA has approved its use for depression, insomnia and anxiety. My own sleep has vastly improved as it has for about forty of my patients as well as lowering anxiety and giving a mood elevating feeling. The device can be ordered through Dr. Harold Stecker who distributes them out of a company called Health Directions (215-269-0400). I do recommend the units highly as they have helped many of my patients (and myself) relax. The CES seems to be a truly helpful little device that can be used while doing other activities though I wouldn't recommend driving with while in use because it is so pleasantly relaxing."
Dr. Dean R.

Research
Craniel Electrical Stimulation (CES) - Research
Below is a small sampling of research abstracts we have available on CES. The complete research studies on these and other CES related topics are available upon request.
Treatment of Depression-Shealy, C. et al, Depression: A diagnostic, neurochemical profile and therapy with CES, J of Neuro. & Ortho. Med Surg. 10(4): 319-21, 1989.
Research was conducted with 4 groups: (1) "normal group", (2) intractable chronic pain, (3) chronic pain with depression, and (4) longstanding depression unresponsive to medication. Psychological tests, serotonin and cholinesterace levels were measured pre and post. Depressed patients improved most with treatment; 60% reported improvement, 44% of the pain patients reported improvement. In the depressed patients, after treatment, both serotonin and cholinesterace levels improved significantly. (Modified author abstract).
Treatment of Anxiety-Schmitt, R. Capo, T. & Boyd, E. CES as a treatment for anxiety in chemically dependent persons. Alcoholism: Clinical and experimental Research. 10(2): 158-160, 1986.
60 substance abusers, mean age 33.9, were given either CES (30), sham CES (10), or (20) no expr. treatment. Four psychological measures administered pre and post. CES and sham patients received 30 min. of treatment daily for 15 days. Treatment t-tests reveal CES patients had significantly greater improvement than did either control group. No placebo effect noted. (Modified author abstract.)
Insomnia- Weiss, M.F. The treatment of insomnia through electrosleep, J Nerv & Ment.Dis. 157(2): 108-120, 1973.
Patients with objectively measured insomnia were selected randomly from volunteers. After pre-treatment baseline (3 nights) 24 CES treatment and simulated treatments in a double blind manor latency of sleep onset was significantly decreased in CES group, and wake time decreased in CES group, but not in sham group. Stage 1 sleep also decreased significantly in CES group. (Modified author abstract)
Headache Treatment-Solomon, S. et al, Safety and effectiveness of Cranial Electrotherapy in the treatment of tension headache. Headache, 29,(7): 445-450, 1989.
100 patients were enrolled in a multi center study to evaluate CES effectiveness of treating headaches. Pain scores before and after 10 minute treatments of individual headaches as well as patient and physician global evaluations were the primary efficacy variables. Following use of the active unit, patients reported an average reduction in pain intensity of approximately 35%. Placebo patients reported a reduction of approximately 18%. The difference was statistically significant (p=0.01). (Modified author abstract).
Modification of brain wave activity-Braverman, E. & Blum, K. Modification of P300 amplitude and other electrophysiological parameters of drug abuse. Cur Ther Res. 48(4): 586-56, 1990.
P300 waves have a reduced amplitude in many alcoholics, which does not revert to normal, even after continued abstinence. 13 alcohol and/or drug abusers and 2 staff controls were selected as they entered the clinic for a computerized EEG. All were given 40 minutes of CES between pre and post EEG. There were no significant changes in the controls. Following the CES the patient's P300 amplitude increased significantly (P<.05). The time went from a pretreatment of 308 to 317 msec post-treatment. The amplitude (dV) sent from pretreatment of 7.0 to 9.9 post-treatment. Also there were significant positive shifts in alpha, delta, theta and beta spectra in patients who were abnormal in one or more of these areas prior to CES treatment. It was concluded that CES might be a significant non-drug treatment for the underlying electrophysiological disorder of the drug abuser, because the normalization of these electrophysiological parameters are characteristic of pharmaceutical treatment. Long term follow up of insomnia treatment-Cartwright, R.D. & Weiss, M. F. The effects of electrosleep on insomnia revisited, J Nerv & Ment. Dis. 161 (2): 134-137, 1975.
Two year follow up done at U of Ill. of Weiss's. The treatment patients, with the exception of 1 person, continued to be free of insomnia 2 years later. Of the sham treated group, 4 had difficulty sleeping but 3 of the 5 awoke moderately well rested. (Modified author abstract)
